Manna Day, the dancer saved by the Phantom from the evil clutches of the Mesabi (see S003 The Fire Goddess), is waiting to leave for the States when she meets a fellow countryman called Whitey. Confiding in Manna, Whitey tells her that he is a fugitive from a framed murder charge in the States and accepts her suggestion that they seek help from the Phantom.

Arriving in New York to get to the bottom of the story, the Phantom tries to locates Mr. Stick, the corrupted lawyer who initially framed White. It does not take the Phantom long to learn that Mr. Slick is the leader of a ruthless murder ring and that danger is lurking around every corner....
